A place of natural tranquillity, hidden in the heart of Berlin, Wilmina Hotel is a former courthouse and abandoned women’s prison that has been transformed by the German firm Grüntuch Ernst Architects into a peaceful and serene family run luxury hotel. The sheltered lush garden and interflowing courtyards are perfectly suited for an extravagant getaway for you and your four-legged friend.
Nestled in the heart of bustling Charlottenburg, along one of the city’s main thoroughfares, Kantstrasse, the rooms occupy the former prison cells that have been merged, to accommodate comfortable spaces with bathrooms. However, don’t be disturbed by the fact that history still has its place here and guestrooms still have bars on windows and the original cell door. When entering the lobby of this luxury hotel, the luminous atmosphere, high-ceilings and the very inviting fireplace lounge, will overwhelm you.
Looking back at the history, the criminal court and the associated prison were built as freestanding structures by the architects Adolf Bürckner and Eduard Fürstenau and dates back to 1896. The section that lies at the back of the complex was used as a prison for resistance fighters during World War II.
The front building was used as a lay judge’s court with four departments; and later housed the estate administration, the State Institute for Chemistry and most recently, after the prison closed in 1985, this section served as an archive for the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf land registry.
The hotel’s Lovis restaurant, run by chef Sophia Rudolph, located in the former lockyard, invites guests to indulge in a memorable culinary experience of contemporary German cuisine.
Whether you’re looking for foodie fun, the cultural crème de la crème in the capital or the best of Berlin nightlife, the Wilmina Hotel Berlin is the ultimate home from home for your trip to the capital.
For exploring the city further, you’ll find that the Brandenburg Gate is only about 6km from the hotel, along with the Reichstag, which is also approximately 6km away.
