The art of living since 1858, this modern hotel beautifully combines contemporary design with classic 1920s architecture. Inspired by all the memories and experiences that Hotell Mårtenson has offered over the years, but not least by Franz & Greta Gruber who during the middle of the 20th century lived and worked at the Hotel in Halmstad.

The hotel offers all you need for a luxury getaway, and everything about the hotel centres back to Greta and Franz. If you’re a fan of the Swedish TV series, (english title “The Restaurant”), then a visit to the Hotell Mårtenson is a must…and your dog is welcome!

The TV series, described as the next Downtown Abbey, follows the ever-changing lives of the Löwander family and their popular restaurant. Haverdal resident Johan Rosenlind, the man behind the original idea for the series, actually worked at Hotell Mårtenson in the 1990s. It was there he found inspiration for parts of the series. The series character Helga Löwander, is referred to as “The aunt in the attic” and this nickname is based on a true story. “The aunt in the attic” actually lived in Hotell Mårtenson in Halmstad. Her name was Greta Gruber, and she was the widow of Franz Gruber, the man who started Hotell Mårtenson. He died in 1969. In his will, he wrote that Greta should be allowed to live on the top floor for as long as she lived and she should receive her meals free from the hotel. The 5th floor was built in the early part of the 20th century to serve as a residence for the manager and it was only converted into hotel rooms in 1996.

There is fine selection of restaurants and bars at the hotel, you’ll feel completely spoilt for choice. All are named after Greta and Franz and are inspired by their many gastronomical encounters from all over the globe. Gretas Tak a hidden oasis of this exquisite hotel, overlooks the rooftops of the city is the place to be to capture the glorious sunsets.

The central location makes it easy to get around the city. The Halmstad Castle, only 700 m away and Halmstad beach is about a 25-minute walk making for the perfect stroll with your four-legged friend.
