With a history that dates back 200 years to megalithic times, the São Lourenço do Barrocal is an 810-hectare agricultural estate, which sits in Portugal’s spectacular Alentejo countryside in the foothills of the medieval village of Monsaraz and nearby the Alqueva lake. A pet-friendly property of understated luxury, surrounded by ancient holm oaks, olive groves and vineyards, is a working farm producing fruit and various other crops as well as its own wine.

 

The property is very family-oriented offering the utmost service and all the comfort of modern living. It has been in the same family for over two centuries and José António Uva is the eighth generation of the same family to have lived at São Lourenço do Barrocal, and has been the driving force behind the development of the estate, which took 14 years to create, making it what it is today.

 

São Lourenço do Barrocal is made up of 7 buildings, divided into 2 sets along one main cobblestone street. Transformed into an elegant luxury boutique hotel, the ancient barns, outbuildings, and olive press have been renovated into guestrooms, suites, cottages and a spa, while the stables continue to house horses. As an equestrian, you will certainly enjoy this experience during your stay.

 

There are 22 guestrooms, 2 suites, and 16 cottages on the property, all with breath-taking countryside views, all with modern amenties.

 

The restaurant offers a cuisine that is deeply rooted in Alentejo’s tradition, respecting the flavour and simplicity of the region. From the farm to the table you’ll enjoy the freshest organic produce and local delicacies.

You will also discover the Alqueva’s Dark Sky Reserve, an area covering more than 3.000 square kilometres surrounding the biggest artificial lake in Europe. The ideal location to enjoy stargazing for most of the year, the world’s first “Starlight Tourism Destination, it is renowned as one of the best of all places to watch the sky and the stars at night.
