In the heart of Tuscany’s wild Maremma countryside, between Rome and Florence, and surrounded by 40 hectares of organic vineyards, olive groves, and farmland you’ll discover the pet friendly property, Castello di Vicarello, a former castle transformed into a luxurious Mediterranean retreat.
This charming residence, which sits 350 meters above sea level, and has striking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea is located at Poggi del Sasso. About twenty kilometres inland from the sea, it is the essence of contemporary luxury. With a history dating back over 900 years, the estate and castle was built by the Republic of Siena and offers an atmosphere unrivalled in Italy’s most famous region of Tuscany.
25 years ago, Carlo and Aurora Baccheschi Berti began the journey of restoring the 900-year-old castle to its original splendour and converting three areas of surrounding land into what are now our award-winning, homeopathically fertilised vineyards.
Castello di Vicarello is independently owned and managed by the multi-generational Baccheschi-Berti family. The initial restoration of the castle took over 12 years to complete, and further restoration continues to this day. The family dog, a Labrador-Maremma cross, Uva is the castle’s mascot spending her nights outdoors ensuring the ultimate protection for in residence guests.
All the elegant suites, guestrooms and the independent villa at the Castello di Vicarello feature the highest standard of furniture and objects gathered through years of travelling, and, where possible, boast fireplaces, stoves, terraces or pergolas.
The gourmet menus are based on local recipes, using the own Castle’s production and wines from the local vineyards creating meals that incorporate the flavours of rustic, Tuscan cuisine. With a choice of candle lit dinners on the grassy terrace with panoramic views of the Maremma, or inside the castle in the romantic glass veranda off the family kitchen.
The magnificent garden, with cascades of flowers and aromatic plants, together with some majestic centuries-old olive trees and cypresses, frames the two panoramic swimming pools. The luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation around the castle invites you to discover the splendid countryside, scented with sea-air, on foot, by bicycle or on horse, an opportunity not to be missed for those who love riding and which is offered by various stables nearby.
The village of Paganico is approximately 11 km away, and a little further is the Grosseto’s town centre, which is about 36 km away. The picturesque coastal town of Castiglione della Pescaia is about an hour’s drive from the property. The beautiful city of Siena is also worth visiting in the region and will take just under an hour by car.
With an emphasis on nature, food, wine and wellbeing, your stay at the Castello di Vicarello allows you to totally immerse in the natural rhythms of Tuscan life.
