Dating back to 1912 when it first opened, Hotel Maria Cristina, a Luxury Collection Hotel has been intimately linked to the history and cultural life of San Sebastian. The hotel’s namesake, Spain’s regent Maria Cristina, was the first person to cross the threshold. The majestic design of the hotel is by architect Charles Mewes, the man responsible for the Ritz in Madrid and Paris.
Since opening, the Hotel Maria Cristina, a Luxury Collection Hotel has been intimately linked to the history and cultural life of San Sebastian. In the late 19th century the seaside town on the southern point of the Bay of Biscay became a favourite destination for royalty and aristocrats who came to enjoy the sunshine and newly recognised therapeutic properties of sea bathing. San Sebastian passed from being a sleepy fishing village into a thriving cosmopolitan town.
The hotel guestrooms and suites are contemporary in design and décor, with marble fireplaces, glass lamps and velvet turquoise arm chairs, married with shades of grey, beige and green to give the rooms an exquisite elegance.
Looking out over the Urumea River and Victoria Eugenia Theatre, Hotel Maria Cristina’s restaurants offer the highest quality service in a charming ambience. The restaurants create their seasonal á la carte menus according to daily market produce, serving classic fresh fish and meat dishes, with reverence to the region’s fresh flavours.
Internationally recognised for its delicious gastronomic offerings, San Sebastian is a gastronomic paradise, a 16 Michelin starred city with fascinating culture, superb beaches and the legendary International Film Festival. Synonymous with charm and sophistication, since the inauguration of the San Sebastian Film Festival in 1953, the hotel was still attracting big names – screen stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Woody Allen, Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Brad Pitt and Susan Sarandon.
